Clydesdales are often described as 'gentle giants' and it's an incredibly apt description.
A huge proportion of the stables we looked into had sleepy residents, completely at ease with their noisy surroundings, in some cases actually fast asleep, others merely dozing. Horses only sleep on their sides like this when they feel safe, so its testament to their excellent natures and the comfort of the site that they feel like they can just drop off and they'll be fine.
This one eyed me suspiciously for a moment then went back to sleep. XD
One thing I love most about Clydesdales is the huge variety in their markings thanks to whatever weird form of sabino they've got.
(also that belly fluff is just the best thing)
Beard!
Natural highlights - some people pay through the nose for an ombre like this! :P
This handsome boy couldn't look more noble if he tried.
Someone hadn't quite woken up yet. XD
#selfiefail
Many of the people decorate their stables with pictures of their horses, especially if they're a stud or looking to sell, and it's always nice when you can find out their name and stuff. Anyway, we were just walking past when we heard a woman going 'Oi! Now that’s not how you treat your pictures!’ and when we looked over, this lovely big Clydesdale was leaning out of his stable and shoving the big wooden board of photos off to one side, so after some tutting, she took him out and parked him in the aisle while she fixed his portraits and mucked him out. XD
I laughed rather too much at this.
The majority of the heavy horses at the RHS are Clydesdales, with the odd team of Shires in the turnouts, but the last few years have seen two teams of more exotic breeds - Canadian Belgians and American Percherons!
Both breeds are huge, and you don't really appreciate their sheer scale until there are people in the shot!
Magda probably isn't the best scale actually as she's tiny :P |
Selfie with a bum. This is my life now apparently.
I'm 5'6 if that's any help! |
The Percherons were about the same size but I think I preferred them to the Belgians.
SO SHINY!
As we left the stables later on, I spotted a couple of them tied up waiting to be harnessed, only one had managed to break his tie and was happily flinging the leadrope around like it was nothing. XD
Some of the Clydesdales were getting tacked up too, but we had other plans so moved on towards the pony stables.
This one was in the process of being groomed and I liked the handy cloth hanger! XD
Next up, Highlands and Shetlands!
